Pushing Virtualization to the Limits

We have a Windows Server 2008 r2 with Hyper-V on a true server hardware and dozens of VMs on it. I’ve setup an Ubuntu x64 machine on my computer and wanted to consolidate by moving it to the server. Export/import went fine, but it booted into a black screen with a cursor in upper left corner.

After some googling – here’s what I’ve found:

  1. x64 operating system guests require hardware virtualization support (http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=31215)
  2. you cannot run 2 hardware virtualization agents at the same timeĀ http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=39859

Ergo, I cannot run x64 guests in VirtualBox as long as Hyper-V is in place. Too bad, must find another solution…

One Response to Pushing Virtualization to the Limits

  1. v. says:

Ouch! Next thing I’ve tried is to install x86 Ubuntu in the same VirtualBox, and guess what – host rebooted!
